Darryl Carter works from inherent good taste. This self-taught designer has achieved
something quite rare in the world of interiors: his own signature style.
You can see it featured on the covers and pages of home magazines like House Beautiful,
Traditional Home and O at Home. What’s unique about Darryl’s design is that while
it’s featured in these more traditional magazines, it is equally embraced by the
more modern publications such as Metropolitan Home and Elle Décor. This speaks to
the unusual versatility of his aesthetic. He designed a furniture collection for
Neiman Marcus, and has a lighting collection with The Urban Electric Company. He
has made appearances on Fine Living, PBS and HGTV. In 2008, Clarkson Potter will
publish Darryl’s first coffee table book, The New Traditional; a chronicle of his
design work with insight into his process. Darryl Carter was a lawyer in Washington,
DC, but his true passion was art and design After his own home appeared on the cover
of Metropolitan Home in 1997 and was highlighted in Rizzoli’s book Private Washington,
he soon found himself in the decorating business.
Darryl’s work is characterized as “The New Traditional” due to his novel pairing
of the modern with the antique. His refined approach to balance, scale and palette
is the product of years of years of interior decorations and design. His look pairs
practical with beautiful and use of antiques converse with bold modern art. Creamy white
walls contrast with espresso-dark floors. Darryl Carter believes that home should
be a respite, not a hotel room. The mood within the rooms he designs is thoughtfully
calm. The pieces within them: comfortable yet beautiful relying on timeless, classic
shapes and forms… collected over time. The new traditional is perfectly aligned
with Thomasville’s iconic past, bringing a fresh approach to designing beautiful,
livable furniture for the modern consumer.
