Excerpts from "Red Alert" in the March 2007 issue of Traditional Home
Painter Thomas Eakins marked each of his 19th-century works with at least one
brush stroke of red to draw attention—a choker that highlighted a woman's
neck, a russet-colored dog, maroon backgrounds that made the objects in his paintings
pop.
Fast forward to 2007, and Italian jewelry designer Roberto Coin employs the same
tactic. A signature ruby seals each piece of his jewelry with authenticity, although
its presence is a less obvious one, incorporated subtly (sometimes even on the bauble's
back side) to cultivate happiness and fortune, rather than make a statement.
