A rift valley is a linear lowland or trench between highlands or mountain ranges created by the action of a geologic rift or fault. East Africa’s Rift Valley, which runs through Kenya and Tanzania, contains some of the world’s deepest lakes. Lakes such as Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika formed in various valleys of the rift zone including Africa’s largest, Lake Victoria.
